MRBA’s Sen. Rich Draheim (R-Madison Lake) authors Town House Definition Bill

Townhouse Definition Bill  HF792 / SF578

The Builders Association of MN announced today their townhouse definition bill was introduced in the Minnesota Legislature, with great authors in both the House and Senate! These bills are chief authored by building industry members Rep. Tama Theis (R-Saint Cloud) and Sen. Rich Draheim (R-Madison Lake)! A huge thank you to both of these exemplary lawmakers. We’re excited to have broad bi-partisan support for this initiative. Click the links above to see all the authors from around the state!

In an effort to encourage the construction of affordable, market-rate housing, these bills clarify that a townhouse is defined as of three or more connected units, instead of MN’s current rule that defines townhouse as two or more connected, individually-owned units. This will clarify a technical issue identified by the Court of Appeals.

Both of the bills were introduced on February 2, 2017 to the Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee in the House, and to the Jobs and Economic Growth Committee in the Senate. We look forward to upcoming hearings (stay tuned!) to discuss this issue further, and to enact the language into law!
